Tanning Tips

By Lauren Walker Lee

A few things spring to mind when the summery weather hits. The need for a pedicure and the need for a spray tan. Though it could be argued a sunless tan is a year round must for some, it really kicks into high gear when the winter months are in the rearview mirror.

We are all now very well versed in the harmful effects of the sun’s rays on our skin, and though yes we all want that vitamin D, we can protect our skin with the myriad SPF products on the market (shout out to Supergoop Glowscreen) while still having that amazing J-Lo glow. This all without sacrificing the health of our skin or advancing the signs of aging.

Both professional spay tans and at home products have come along way in both ingredients and efficacy. Organic clean products are important characteristics for a beauty treatment that visibly (and temporarily) alters the appearance of your skin but it still can be a daunting task. Look for clean products that are free of DHA and other synthetic ingredients- and if they have moisturizing properties like hyaluronic acid that’s a bonus. With countless tanning products on the market and more added each year it can make the process of sunless tanning seem messy.  And if you are still haunted by the horrors of an Oompa Loompa tan, you are not alone, they still occur in 2022.

With summer around the corner we went straight to the source to talk sunless tanning. Here Nicole Hyatt, founder of Tan On The Run reveals her top tips and tricks to achieve a flawless tan sans sun.

Follow instructions…

The most important thing on achieving a flawless tan is following the pre and post instructions to the letter.  Not only is exfoliating very important, but when you do it is just as important! 24hrs ahead of the appointment ensures your pores have time to close back up before the tan. Don’t exfoliate before you head to your appointment or put on your tanning mitt.

Be careful of your soaps & moisturizers…

The types of soaps and moisturizers also can mean the difference between long lasting perfection or a peeling disaster!  The golden rule is the more natural the better and stay away from all Dove products as they strip the tan! When I see clients I send over a link of pre tan instructions

Orange is still a thing…

I wish I could say getting an orange spray tan is so 2005, but they still exist. This comes down to using quality products or seeking out an experienced technician helping you to choose the right shade for your skin tone. One shade DOES NOT fit all.  A fair skinned person should never do extra dark; it just won’t look natural. If you are going with a professional spray tan a good company will have multiple options to suit all skin tones.

Quality ingredients matters…

We have formulated an entire line of pre and post tanning products to ensure the perfect glow every time. Extending your tan is possible with proper care, tan extenders, and less showers if you are really trying to stretch it.  It is possible for a tan to last between between 7-10 days.
